APA 2024 Resources for International Attendees

Passport and Visa Information

In-person APA 2024 events will take place in Seattle, WA. For non-U.S. citizens, it is important to remember that you will need a passport (valid up to six months after your visit) and, often, a non-immigrant visa to enter the United States. Visitors planning to attend the convention will most likely need to apply for a B-1 visa. Consult the Department of State’s website for information on visa types and application procedures. U.S. policy allows citizens from certain countries to travel to the United States without a visa when they meet the eligibility requirements of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Consult the Department of State’s Frequently Asked Questions about the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for details.

Inbound travelers to the United States from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries will be denied boarding by the airlines if they have not complied with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) program. ESTA, introduced in January 2009, requires all international travelers from VWP countries to register in an online database. International travelers to the United States must go to the ESTA website and fill out an application before leaving their country of origin for entry to the U.S. by air or sea.

All other travelers will have to apply for visas to attend APA 2024. This can take some time, so you are encouraged to apply for the visa at least four months before you need it. To begin, make an appointment at the nearest (preferably in your country) United States Consulate or Embassy. If you need directions and contact information, you can consult the State Department website. This website provides the application form for a visa and links to your nearest Consulate or U.S. Embassy, which will advise you of requirements for a visa. In general, it is recommended that you provide the following materials in support of your visa application: the completed application form; your passport; evidence of your intention to return to your country; your trip itinerary; proof of your professional or educational status; and a letter of invitation.

Given U.S. security concerns, many Consulates require personal interviews as part of the standard application procedure. Since this requirement can cause processing delays, your early application is strongly encouraged. If travel plans depend on early approval of the visa application, specify this at the time of application.

When you arrive in the United States, you will present your visa and passport to an immigration inspector, who will be ultimately responsible for admitting you to the country. The inspector may ask you questions about the purpose of your visit, where you are planning to stay, and when you plan to return to your country. While a visa issued by a consulate allows a visitor to receive preliminary permission for admission to the United States, the final decision is made by the immigration inspector.
